A nuclear reactor for research based on Korea’s home-grown reactor technology has been installed at Jordan University of Science and Technology in Irbid, north of the Middle Eastern country, and is ready for activity after six-month-long trial operation.

The Ministry of Science, ICT, and Future Planning on Wednesday said that a consortium led by the state-run Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) and Daewoo Engineering & Construction (Daewoo E&C) has completed building Jordan Research and Training Reactor (JRTR) and finished sixth-month-long performance testing.

The Korean consortium won the order for JRTR construction project in 2009, marking it as the Korea’s first home-grown nuclear reactor export. In 2011, Korea exported a 1,400-megawatt nuclear power plant for commercial use to the United Arab Emirates but the JRTR stands as the first nuclear reactor export for the country as it inked the contract in 2009. It has taken six years to complete the project based on $160 million financing from the Jordan government.

The 5-megawatt nuclear reactor in Jordan is designed for leading basic science research such as using neutrons for nuclear fission and conducting other various scientific experiment and education.

Separately, KAERI will sign an additional agreement to provide maintenance and training support to Jordan upon the Jordan government’s request for operational aid for the next two years.

According to Korean science ministry, Korea entered international bidding on the Pallas project building a new nuclear reactor for research use in the Netherlands and has been providing technological assistance to Qatar and Thailand on research reactors.
