S. Korean govt lays out plan to promote drone industry

The South Korean government will subsidize 200 billion won ($171 million) to groom local market in pilotless air vehicles and will pool together another 500 billion won with private sector to promote the industry, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said on Tuesday.

The government plans to place procurements for drones for power reactor surveillance and forest fire watch to create public-sector demand worth more than 200 billion won over the next three years.

Drones are currently used for power line repairs, agricultural pest control, and logistics. The government plans to expand public use of pilotless planes in broader areas such as urban management and support exports.

The government will also lead joint public-private investment projects worth 500 billion won over the next three years to develop advanced pilotless airplane technology. The core technologies such as enabling long flights, withstanding bad weather conditions, and avoiding collisions owned by air force or government-funded research institutes will be transferred to private institutions or explored through joint research.

In addition, special pilotless plane projects for sectors such as disaster response system and scientific farming will be selected and nurtured by the trade ministry together with related government offices. The government will also build and provide more spaces and technical support to test out industrial drones.
