South Korea’s POSCO ICT Co. announced Tuesday it has installed electric vehicle recharging stations in Costa Rica as part of its project to help the country establish the nation-wide smart energy system to reduce green gas emissions.

POSCO ICT said that it on Monday embarked on the test run of an EV charger installed at Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) in the country’s capital city of San José.

Costa Rica has instituted a policy to replace gas-burning vehicles by electric ones by 2021 with a bold goal to become a carbon-neutral country. The EV infrastructure is being built with an aim to assist the country in reducing the use of fossil fuels.

In October, the POSCO ICT signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with ICE of Costa Rica to cooperate on the smart energy project in the Central American country.

Under the contract, POSCO ICT agreed to build the EV recharging platform and infrastructure to boost the penetration of electric vehicles into Costa Rica and to push for projects for large energy storage systems and electricity demand management system in the country.
