The South Korean government upped its commitment to climate control by promising to bring down greenhouse emissions by 37 percent by 2030 instead of self-imposed 30 percent target by 2020 it had promised in 2009.

The government was confident of cleaner energy commitments through proliferation of emission-free cars and new technologies on renewable energy.

During the cabinet meeting held in Seoul on Tuesday, the government approved new long-term climate control outline running until 2030, replacing the previous 2020-deadeline roadmap.

The government already sent its clean energy outline to be included in the Paris Agreement that took effect in November, with South Korea pledging to cut back carbon emissions from current business-as-usual (BAU) levels by 37 percent, or 315 million tons with 219 million tons reduced from home turf.

The toughened climate control regulations under the recently concluded Paris Agreement that replaces the 1997 Kyoto Protocol require195 members to keep to their timeline and emission targets.

The biggest cutback would come from power reactors, or 6.45 million tons. Energy suppliers will shift sources to cleaner low-carbon mix including renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, biomass and geothermal.

The factory sector is also required to scale back emission by 5.64 million tons.
