The roles of South Korean airliners have become rationalized with the full-service carriers expanding long-distance flights, leaving their budget counterparts more leeway to compete in the short-distance market with customized services.

According to the study on 62 new or cancelled air routes by the Maeil Business Newspaper, the two full-service carriers Korean Air Lines and Asiana Airlines have cut back on the highly-competitive Asian route and instead increased flights to American and European continents. The five budget carriers, - Jeju Air, Eastar Jet, T’way Air, Jin Air and Air Busan - offered more destinations in China and Japan to diversify its short-distance choices.

For Koreans, they now have a wider range of choices to travel in Japan. Of 42 added destinations by budget liners, 12 are in Japan. Cities beyond Seoul also fly more frequently to Japan.

Air Busan has started flying from Daegu to Fukuoka since September, and so has T’way Air. Jin Air opened a new route from Busan to Kitakyushu starting this month.

Also this month, Jeju Air offers flights from Busan to Narita, Air Busan from Daegu to Osaka and Sapporo. According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Korean air travelers to Japan increased 23.1 percent on year to reach 1.38 million as of October.
