South Korea’s unemployment rate could reach 16-year high of 3.9 percent in 2017 amid foggy economic prospects, said a state-run institute.

The employed number will add by 284,000 to 26.52 million, according to 2016 labor market evaluation and 2017 employment outlook released by the Korea Labor Institute (KLI).

The unemployment rate is expected to reach 3.9 percent, up 0.2 percentage point from this year’s 3.7 percent to hover at the highest since 4.0 percent in 2001 when the country was still recovering from the financial crisis of the late 1990s.

Rising jobless rate comes from demographic changes in Korea as the baby-boomers in Korea have begun to join the retired population. The number of employed in their 50s grew only 90,000 from January to October this year, compared with 151,000 over the same period last year.

The number of people in their 50s will continue to drop in the near future, bringing down the total number of employed in Korea, said Sung Jae-min, director of labor trend analysis office in the KLI.
