Hansol Paper Co., South Korea’s leading paper manufacturer, will up manufacturing and exports of specialty papers and lessen the share of printing papers to ensure new growth in a digitalized world.

The company’s recent announcement to merge with its subsidiary Hansol Artone Paper underscores its transition in business. Hansol Paper has focused on investing in thermal paper for years. It acquired Schades, Europe`s No. 1 thermal paper producer, at 42.9 billion won ($36.58 million) in 2013, followed up by 2014 purchase of Dutch label printer Telrol at 40 billion won. Last year, the company took over Germany`s thermal paper converter R+S Group at 22 billion won and systematized the production, processing and distribution of thermal paper.

Thermal paper is a specialty paper that changes color when exposed to heat and is used to manufacture receipts (POS), labels attached to package products before delivery and movie tickets. While the demand for printing paper is slowing down amid market saturation, sales of thermal paper have been on a steady rise, showing a 4.2 to 6.6 percent growth a year.

The company plans to tap into the global thermal paper market including Southeast Asia, China and South America and pledges to achieve two trillion won in total sales and 160 billion won in operating profit by 2020, Lee Sang-hun, CEO of Hansol Paper said.
