LG Electronics Inc. is making a foray into medical imaging devices market, utilizing its years of experience in advanced flat-panel display technology, the company said Monday.

The Korean home appliance giant said it has unveiled its new monitors and an advanced new radiography device at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America held in Chicago, the U.S. from November 27 to December 1.

The LG 8MP Surgical Monitor, the LG 8MP Clinical Review Monitor and the LG Digitalized X-Ray Detector for Radiography, will mark LG’s venture into new business.

LG bets big on the 27-inch LG 8MP Surgical Monitor that boasts ultra high-definition (UHD) resolution with brightness levels of up to 800 nits and clarity of 8 megapixels.

In particular, the company claims its surgical monitor allows more vivid comparison among red colors with additional space dedicated to the deep red spectrum, enabling doctors to more easily distinguish different types of tissue and blood vessels.

With smartphone demand peaking and its mobile phone business lagging behind rivals, LG Electronics has been exploring new growth engines in the business-to-business (B2B) market. It has already jumped into auto parts business, clinching a number of deals to supply parts to global finished car makers such as General Motors Co. The company is now adding medical devices business to its business portfolio with hopes that this new business further helps it to expand in the B2B market, it said in a statement.
