Approval rating for South Korean President Park Geun-hye fell once again to a new record low of 4 percent amid escalating influence-peddling scandal involving her close friend Choi Soon-sil.

According to a survey conducted by local pollster Gallup Korea from Tuesday to Thursday on 1,004 Koreans, only 4 percent of the respondents said Park has been doing her job well while a whopping 93 percent disapproved of the way she is handling her job as president and 4 percent undecided. The 4 percent approval rating is the lowest figure for Korean presidents since Gallup began conducting the survey in 1988.

The ruling Saenuri Party’s approval rating also hit an all-time low of 12 percent, trailing behind the main opposition Minjoo Party whose approval rating reached a record high of 34 percent and the minor opposition People’s Party with 16 percent.

The worst-ever political scandal prompted a wide range of prosecution investigation not only on Choi but also on Park’s long-time political aides and even Korea’s large conglomerates. Choi is suspected of influencing state affairs by abusing her friendship with Park and arm-twisting companies to make a handsome donation to organizations established by her. The prosecution wants to question Park face to face as part of the probe but it is facing opposition from the presidential office. Prosecutors on Sunday also believed Park was an accomplice in the alleged extortion.

The scandal has sparked a huge public outrage over the past few weeks. Tens of thousands of citizens took to the streets in central Seoul every Saturday to demand Park’s resignation.
