In another grim data on the demographic front, the number of Koreans tying the knot would be all-time low this year, the government said.

According to September data by Statistics Korea Thursday, 205,900 couples registered to have become husband and wife from January to September. It is the lowest figure since the data was compiled from 2000. The number never hit below 220,000 in the first nine months over the last two decades or so.

“The annual figure could stop at 280,000 at current rate,” said an official at the statistical office. The younger population has thinned and even among them, many are shunning marriage largely because of financial burden, she added.

Newly-born number also suffered as result. New births were registered at 34,300 for September, 5.8 percent, or 2,100 fewer against the same month a year ago. The figure is also all-time low for September. Total number of newly-born for the first nine months was tallied at 317,400, 5.6 percent or 18,900 fewer than the same period last year.

The third-quarter fertility ratio was 0.29, coming to 1.16 per woman in annualized rate.
