South Korea’s top manufacturer Samsung Electronics Co. is out to add QD Vision, a U.S. technology company holding a number of patents related to nanomaterials, to its lengthening list of overseas technology assets to further strengthen its edge in display-making.

Chung Chil-hee, head of Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology, told reporters on Wednesday of the company plan to purchase QD Vision on his way to a weekly meeting of Samsung Electronics division heads.

Founded in 2004 by researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), QD Vision owns rich collection of patents in quantum dot materials. QD Vision has supplied quantum dot films to China`s TCL Corp. and teamed up with Sony Corp. in developing quantum dot TVs. It also formed an agreement with LG Display Co. in 2010 for the development of quantum dot technology.

Samsung, a leader in OLED technology, is seeking to develop quantum dot LED (QD LED), dubbed as a next-generation display option capable of competing with organic light emitting diode (OLED). The company was the first to mass-produce QD materials for displays and already uses the technology inside its premium SUHD TV line-up. It has manufactured film-type QD to mass-produce premium SUHD TVs that have higher and fuller gamut.

Quantum dots are nanometer-scale (one billionth of a meter) semiconductor particles. They are energy efficient and thus can contribute to improving the image quality of displays without requiring additional power.

Shares of Samsung Electronics closed Wednesday at 1,648,000 won ($1,401), up 0.49 percent or 8,000 won from the previous session.
