Livestock authorities bury some 40,000 chickens at a poultry farm where the H5N6 bird flu virus broke out in Haenam, Jeonnam, South Korea.

The deadly bird flu virus is spreading to new areas in the central parts of South Korea since this year’s first bird flu case was reported late last month.

The country’s quarantine authorities Tuesday confirmed an additional outbreak of bird flu caused by the H5N6 virus at a poultry farm in Yangju, Gyeonggi province. A study to find out whether it is highly pathogenic is underway.

Authorities said the new infections were caused by the same virus that was reported at two poultry farms each in Chungbuk and Jeonnam.

As a result, South Korea confirmed the virus outbreak in three regions of Yangju in Gyeonggi-do Province, Eumseong County in Chuncheongbuk-do Province and Haenam in Jeollanam-do Province this year.

Gyeonggi-do provincial government said over 15,000 birds had been culled to prevent the spread of the virus after a report of suspected deaths of 240 chickens at a poultry farm in Yangju on Sunday. Authorities issued a "movement control order" within a radius of 10 kilometers around the farm, where 770,000 chickens and ducks at 119 farms should be buried.

Pocheon which is adjacent to Yangju is also on alert. Pocheon is home to the country’s largest poultry farms, where 180,000 chickens were culled after the outbreaks of AI two times last year.

H5N6 detected first in Korea has been found in several Asian countries including China, Vietnam, Laos and Hong Kong. It has led to at least six deaths among 15 human infections in China.
