Labor talks could become harder for South Korea’s largest automaker Hyundai Motor Co. as an employee laid off for illegally disrupting production has become in charge of representing the union next year’s negotiations.

A former employee with surname Park last week was elected as the union representative of the Hyundai Motor Ulsan 1 factory branch of the militant umbrella trade body Korean Metal Workers’ Union. Park was sacked in January 2014 for forcing the production line to stop. He nevertheless was able to represent the union of Hyundai Motor’s primary industrial workplace because he retains membership on the union. Under the umbrella trade union rules, one does not lose membership on the union if he or she is dismissed for labor activities. The union has been subsidizing Park in monthly pay and bonuses.

Park now represents the workers of the first factory of the Ulsan plant, the world’s single largest automobile plant employing 34,000 workers and turning out 5,600 vehicles a day in negotiations on pay and output terms next year with the management. Branch chiefs of factory workplaces take turn in representing the union in annual negotiations. Next year’s turn falls on the head of the Ulsan factory 1.

The management is baffled that it would have to discuss terms for output and management policies with someone that is not on the corporate payroll.

This year has been the toughest for Hyundai Motor with its presence at home and abroad shrinking as lengthy strikes added to its woes. The company as result has been increasing output in overseas manufacturing facilities at the expense of strike-ridden domestic factories whose productivity lags far behind its U.S. and Chinese counterparts.
