South Korea’s largest automaker Hyundai Motor Co. unveiled electric self-driving IONIQ concept car at the Automobility LA (Los Angeles Auto Show) on Wednesday (local time).

The concept car’s sleek façade is embedded with LiDAR system on its front bumper instead of on the roof enabling the EV to look like any other vehicle on the road “instead of a high school science project,” the company said.

The autonomous IONIQ concept is Hyundai’s first vehicle to meet SAE International’s level four definition of a self-driving car, which means it would be “highly automated,” with the car carrying out all dynamic driving tasks completely autonomously and safely.

Actual driving of the vehicle will be demonstrated at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January 2017 where the automaker will have two autonomous IONIQs driving up and down the neon-and sunlit boulevards of Las Vegas.

Besides the self-driving IONIQ concept, it showcased 18 other vehicles including seven sedans such as Avante, four recreational vehicles such as Santa Fe, five green cars including Sonata plug-in hybrid electric vehicle and two show cars at the auto show.

Hyundai Motor also announced a partnership with WaiveCar - selected startup from its Project IONIQ open call back in August - to run “the world’s first all-electric car sharing program.” The program will allow consumers to drive IONIQ EVs on-demand for two hours at free of charge. In exchange, the vehicle will be wrapped in ads and includes a roof mounted digital display, which generates the advertising revenue WaiveCar uses to offset costs.
