Choi Byung-nam, head of the National Geographic Information Institute, explains the results of a meeting convened to review Google’s request for exporting government-supplied map data outside the country.

The South Korean government decided to disallow Google Inc. using and processing the nation’s map data outside the country citing security concerns.

The decision was made on Friday from a meeting of officials from the National Geographic Information Institute under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and other related government offices.

“We couldn’t easily accept Google’s request to take out the government-administered digital map data under our extraordinary security conditions with North Korea,” said the institute. The government asked the Silicon Valley-based IT company to come up with plans to ensure security protection, but Google has not complied.

The Korean government maintains that it can allow Google use the government-supplied maps if sensitive and military facilities are deleted or blurred on the maps.

Google provides various gaming and location-based services processed from its massive store of digital map data around the world. Because of the limited access, Google offers just 20 percent of its mapping service in Korea which constrains its Street View activation and development of Google map API-based applications.

Under the Korean law, map or photograph for survey is prohibited from being manufactured and carried out of the country. Google has been requesting for authorization to take out data information for more diverse employment.
