Genesis EQ900 (dubbed G90 globally), the first rollout under Hyundai Motor’s fledgling luxury brand, has made the list of a select group of finalists in the sedan division of 2017 North American Car and Truck of the Year (NACTOY), Korea’s top automaker said.
The new premium-league Hyundai flagship would compete with this year’s other entrants Chevrolet Bolt and Volvo’s new S90. The final winner is announced at the Detroit Motor Show in January.
Genesis was created in November 2015 with the Korean automaker hoping to break into the higher-margin luxury segment.
A Hyundai Motor car made the finalists for the car of the year five times. Genesis (not to be confused with the luxury Genesis label) BH in 2009, Sonata in 2011, Avante in 2012 and Genesis (DH) in 2015 received the honor. Of them, Genesis 2009 and Avante in 2012 received the top award.
Mention on the finalists itself is a huge plus to marketing, said a company official.
The best car of the year is chosen by a pool of car reporters of media organizations in North America.
