South Korea’s SM Entertainment Co. and SK Holdings C&C Co. have joined forces to develop artificial intelligence (AI)-based businesses featuring Korean pop stars and celebrities.

The two companies struck a memorandum of understanding on Monday at SM Communication Center in Seoul to develop new entertainment services powered by SK C&C’s IMB Watson based AI service named Aibril.

Under the agreement, they will set up a task force consisting of experts in AI, entertainment and contents development. SM Entertainment, an agency of numerous Korean stars including boy group EXO and girl group Girls’ Generation, will provide contents of its artists and celebrities while SK C&C will offer its AI service Aibril and cloud service.

The two company plan to develop services related to speech recognition by using Aibril’s natural language processing and machine learning technology. For instance, it’s possible to develop an AI-based personal assistant that speaks in voice of celebrities.

The two firms aim to create new business area by combining AI and Hallyu (Korean Wave) and to expand their presence in the global market.

Shares of SM Entertainment closed Monday at 28,600 won, down 1.55 percent or 450 won from the previous session.
