South Korea’s biggest car maker Hyundai Motor Co. and its smaller affiliate Kia Motors Corp. saw sales in Russia grow for the first time in 13 months against the year-ago period in October, pushing their combined share in the market to fresh high of 23.1 percent.

According to Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors on Sunday, the two Korean automakers’ car sales in Russia rose 2.3 percent on year to 29,216 units in October. The sales grew for the first time since September last year when they recorded 4.4 percent on-year growth. International car makers have struggled in Russia after the economy sharply deteriorated due to depressed oil prices and conflict with Ukraine.

Last month, total car sales in Russia recorded disappointing 126,658 units, down 2.6 percent from the same month last year.

Despite the challenging environment, the two Korean automakers were able to expand its October sales by 1.1 percentage points compared to the same period last year. Their combined market share in October is their highest-ever monthly record, replacing the previous monthly high of 22.1 percent in September last year.

By car models, small-sized sedans Hyundai Solaris and Kia Rio became the top two best-selling sedans based on accumulated sales by October, beating Lada Granta, Russia’s all-time favorite. The Hyundai Solaris also has secured the best-selling car of Russia title since February this year.
