Hancom Group, Sourth Korea’s first-generation, leading office and other software developer, is set to expand its business realm by developing artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies through partnership with the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI).

Hancom Group announced on Friday that it struck a business agreement with ETRI to cooperate on the development and commercialization of the AI, VR and AR technologies by 2019. They will initiate joint research and development from December. Hancom plans to make its first round of investment worth 12 billion won ($10.3 million), and further increase investment.

Prior to this agreement, the two organizations selected AI, VR & AR, contents, security and Internet of Things (IoT), core technologies for the so-called 4th Industrial Revolution, as five sectors that they would focus on.

Under the agreement, they will also set up joint research centers at Hancom Tower in Bundang, Gyeonggi Province and at ETRI’s headquarters in Daejeon, and establish a test bed to apply and test their new technologies.

“We will form a new comprehensive ecosystem to cooperate with private sector for technology transfer and joint research and development,” said Lee Sang-hoon, president of ETRI.

Hancom Group Chairman Kim Sang-cheol hoped their cooperation helps foster the growth of the nation’s software industry.
