South Korea’s Dongkuk Steel Co. announced on Friday it has won an order to supply 89,000 tons of steel bars for the new Gori nuclear power reactors 5 and 6 under construction in the Gori nuclear complex in southern coastal region. The supply will last until 2019.

Steel bars for nuclear power plants are high-value products as they are more expensive than ordinary steel bars by more than 200,000 won ($172) per ton. They play an important role in structure safety by preventing cracks in the structure caused by natural disasters like earthquakes and tsunami and maintaining the structure not to expose nuclear materials to the outside even in case of explosion.

For these reasons, steel bars for nuclear power plants must meet more rigorous quality requirements than ordinary steel bars and only those approved by Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. are eligible to supply products and materials.

“We have established a track record of reliability by completing an initial delivery of 75,000 tons of steel bars for the construction of Shin (New) Gori nuclear power plant units 3 and 4 in 2008 and by providing products for Shin-Hanul power plant units 1 and 2 and for a disposal site of low and medium-activity nuclear waste in 2011,” said a company official.
