South Korea’s automotive parts maker Hyundai Wia Corp. has succeeded in developing electric four-wheel-drive (e-4WD) system for the first time in the country and is readying mass production, the company said on Tuesday.

Hyundai Wia’s e-4WD system enhances fuel efficiency by 30 percent while shortening the shift from stop mode to 100 kilometers per hour to 7.9 seconds from 10.7 seconds average in conventional all-wheel-drive cars, according to a test done by the firm.

Global automakers are paying attention to the e-4WD system as a solution to lower emissions and enhanced driving performance.

Japanese carmaker Toyota Corp. applies e-4WD to its flagship hybrid Prius and its upscale brand Lexus’ RX Hybrid and NX 300h.

The system has been favored for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. Swedish car maker Volvo adopts the system in its plug-in hybrid sport utility vehicle (SUV) XC90 which has been released in Korea this year. BMW’s plug-in hybrid sports car i8 and Mitsubishi’s plug-in hybrid SUV Outlander are also equipped with the system.

Hyundai Wia plans to supply its e-4WD to its finished car affiliates Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Motors Corp. with growing focus on green car market. Kia Motors’ hybrid compact SUV Niro will be the first car to be installed with the system.

The company also aims to diversify its supply pipeline beyond the two. It expects its annual sales of e-4WD to exceed 100 billion won ($88 million) in 2021 and reach 154 billion won by 2023.

Shares of Hyundai Wia closed at 78,000 won on Tuesday, up 3.17 percent or 2,400 won from the previous session.
