South Korea’s Meritz Securities Co. plans to invest 1 trillion won ($ 874 million) in 20 aircrafts or more together with institutional investors at home and abroad.

According to the investment banking industry on Thursday, the investors plan to establish a fund worth 1 trillion won by early next month for the investment. Meritz Securities pledged to chip in 250 billion won in equity investment, and the rest 750 billion won will be funded by the Japanese investment bank Mizuho Securities Co. through assets-backed securities (ABS). Korea Investment & Securities Co. is in charge of the fund establishment.

The investment will be made in more than 20 aircrafts owned by GE Capital Aviation Services (GE CAS), the world’s biggest commercial aircraft financing and leasing company under the U.S.-based General Electric Co. (GE). It is the first time for the domestic investors to invest in multiple numbers of airplanes together.

About half of the 20 or more aircrafts are narrow-body ones for short-haul routes run by low-cost carriers that boast high liquidity, according to sources from the industry. And GE CAS also will invest in the fund.

The lease fees will be distributed to the investors and they can also reap profits from possible aircraft sales. The equity investor Meritz Securities expect the investment would generate up to 10 percent return per annum. The ABS investment is expected to produce 4 to 7 percent annual return.
