Taihan Electric Wire Co., South Korea’s leading provider of industrial cables, said on Thursday that it has clinched a $56 million order from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power

(LADWP) to replace aged 138 kilovolt ultra-high voltage underground cables.

Taihan Electric Wire will supply new cables and connecting devices and carry out overall construction to modernize the old cables that were last installed in 1960s and 1970s.

The latest order has led Taihan Electric Wire to reach a quarterly milestone of obtaining a total of $100 million worth cable supply project deals in the United States since the beginning of October. It is a record quarterly amount for the October-December period since it entered the U.S. market in 2000.

In October, Taihan Electric Wire had also received a $52 million project order from a power company in California to supply 230 kilovolt ultra-high voltage underground cables and connecting devices. The massive project involves line construction reaching 20 kilometers and taking initial operation tests.

Earlier on in the third quarter ended September, Taihan Electric Wire had also signed a 5-year contract to supply 69 to 230 kilovolt ultra-high voltage underground cables to a regional power company in California.

In addition to underground cable projects, the Korean company had also bagged an order from Southern California Edison to supply high capacity aluminum conductor composite core or ACCC conductors to replace worn-out aerial cables.

An unnamed official from Taihan Electric Wire said that the company will aim to raise overall sales in the North American region by expanding its sales capacity not only in the U.S. but also in Canada.
