Pre-order volume of Hyundai Motor Co.’s new Grandeur IG, its flagship premium sedan unveiled last week, has reached 15,973 units on the first day after Korea’s largest automaker started taking orders on Wednesday, the company said on Thursday.

It was the biggest one-day pre-order volume in its history, breaking the previous record of 10,827 units made by its mid-sized sedan YF Sonata in 2009. The almost 16,000 pre-orders could mean that the company’s 830 stores across the nation on average drew 19 pre-orders a day. The number is also much more than the total one-month sales volume of mid- to large-sized sedans in the country that amounts to 10,586 units, and almost the same with the combined sales volume of Kia Motors Corp.’s K7, Hyundai’s old Grandeur and GM Korea Co.’s Impala for a month and a half.

Hyundai’s flagship Grandeur, first introduced in 1986, has been the most popular full-sized sedan in Korea, but lost the top spot briefly to Kia’s K7 as it was not updated over the past five years. The new Grandeur aims to appeal to both young and old with its slicker design, innovative technological upgrades and enhanced safety features.

The country’s biggest carmaker pins its hopes on the new Grandeur to help it restore its challenged status at home. Its domestic sales volume last month plunged more than 30 percent on year due to the prolonged labor strikes and lack of demand following the end of government’s special tax incentive program.

Hyundai Motor shares closed Thursday at 136,500 won, down 2.15 percent or 3,000 won from the previous session.
