South Korea’s full-service carrier Asiana Airlines Inc. will launch a new loyalty program that will allow customers to upgrade their business-class seats to first class in a bid to minimize the number of empty first-class seats and improve profits.

Asiana Airlines said on Monday that a new loyalty program dubbed “upgrade membership” will be available for business-class flyers allowing them to upgrade their seats to first class from November 1. The premium membership service will be available on three routes to Los Angeles and New York in the U.S. as well as Frankfurt in Germany. But the service will be temporarily unavailable on the Frankfurt route from December 26, 2016 to February 28, 2017.

Customers can purchase the upgrade membership for annual use that comes with unlimited number of seat upgrades to first class at 1.3 million won ($1,138.45) or get a single-use membership at 700,000 won.

The upgrade membership program is expected to encourage more frequent flyers to fly in first-class seats that have been often left empty, as the average price difference between the first and business class seats currently ranges between 3 million won and 4 million won on the three routes, said an unnamed Asiana Airlines officer.

With the adoption of the new loyalty program, Asiana Airline is expected to fly with more first-class passengers who could help it improve profits.
