Samsung Electronics Co. will invest more than $1 billion in its U.S. chip manufacturing plant in Texas until the end of June next year.

The firm’s U.S. operation said Tuesday (local time) in a statement that it would enhance current System Large-Scale Integration (LSI) production to meet the growing demands in the industry for advanced system-on-chip (SoC) products especially for mobile and other electronic devices.

Samsung didn’t elaborate on how larger the production capacity would be after the capital investment.

The Korean electronics giant has set up Samsung Austin Semiconductor LLC (SAS) in 1997, which mainly produces system chips. System chips, also known as non-memory conductors, feed the operating system in a computer.

According to the firm’s statement, Samsung so far invested more than $16 billion for the expansion and maintenance of its Austin facility.

On Wednesday, shares of Samsung closed at 1,643,000 won ($1,428.94), down 0.54 percent, or 9,000 won, from the previous session.
