Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. said Tuesday that it won international credential for a next-generation cost-saving and emission-free steam generating technology using fuel waste together with state utility firm Korea Electric Power Corp (KEPCO).
It received an approval in principle (AiP) from Lloyd’s Register (LR) for 2-megawatt (MW) supercritical CO2 (S-CO2) turbine.
S-CO2 is a fluid state of carbon dioxide where it is held above its critical temperature and critical pressure. The density at that point is similar to that of a liquid and allows the pumping power needed in a compressor to be considerably reduced, thus largely increasing the thermal-to-electric energy conversion efficiency. S-CO2 power conversion technology boosts efficiency by 30 percent and minimizes size of a turbine by a third.
Demand for ultra supercritical power generator is expected to reach 14 trillion won ($12.2 billion) by 2023.
The two plans to commercialize the technology by 2019.
