South Korea’s industrial output in September gained 0.3 percent from the previous month after contraction in August as production disruption at major industrial sites from strikes eased.

According to Statistics Korea, the seasonally adjusted mining and manufacturing output grew 0.3 percent in September against August after 2.4 percent retreat in the previous month. On year, factory output contracted 2.0 percent, the biggest fall since April, amid deteriorated consumer spending and recall crisis at the world’s largest smartphone maker Samsung Electronics.

Consumer spending worsened due to stagnant income and industry-wide stumbles amid prolonged slump. Retail sales - a barometer for consumption - slipped 4.5 percent on month, the heaviest fall since February 2011. Sales were hurt by recall crisis of Samsung Electronics and strikes at household car names Hyundai and Kia.

Corporate spending - facility investment - contracted 4.2 percent on month reversing from 2.9 percent gain in the previous month.

Service sector output fell 0.6 percent in September as Hanjin Shipping crisis hurt the overall transportation sector by 3.1 percent.
