South Korea’s leading cosmetics and personal care products maker LG Household & Healthcare Ltd. struck a deal to acquire the Asia Pacific business of Reach, a dental care brand owned by the global health care giant Johnson & Johnson Inc. (J&J) for an undisclosed amount, the company announced on Tuesday.

The takeover deal would serve as a gateway for the company to enter new markets such as Australia, New Zealand and India, and to expand its presence in countries like China, Japan, Taiwan and Vietnam in which it has been already operating an oral care business. It will step up its efforts to broaden its business in Asia with its prowess in dental products by utilizing Reach brand’s high brand awareness in the global market.

Reach has been selling dental hygiene products such as toothbrushes and floss in six Asia Pacific countries including Japan, Australia and New Zealand. LG Household & Healthcare plans to increase its line-up of premium products in Korea and China, and to penetrate deep into the Japanese market where Reach is the most vibrant with its patented ultra thin toothbrushes.

The company said that its decision to acquire Reach brand’s businesses was driven by high growth potential of the global oral care market. The market expanded by an average of five percent annually over the past five years to reach $40.3 billion in 2015, and is expected to grow rapidly in the future thanks to the rising demand in the emerging markets and increasing awareness on the importance of oral health.
