South Korea’s tech giant Samsung Electronics Co. released its new Internet of Things (IoT) platform ARTIK 0 and ARTIK 7 on Wednesday, accelerating its efforts to expand its presence in the global IoT market.

The ARTIK is an open IoT platform that provides hardware modules, software, cloud, security and IoT ecosystems in a single offering to enable its users to save time, cost and risk when delivering complex IoT solutions.

The ARTIK 0 family of modules features low-power, lightweight and low-cost solutions for heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), lighting, and personal health monitoring. The modules enable users to connect to the network with ease as they are equipped with power-optimized microcontrollers and support low-power wireless standards such as the ZigBee or Bluetooth.

The ARTIK 7 family of modules providing a perfect connectivity with built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and ZigBee is targeted at high-end gateways. It is installed with a high-performing multimedia processor for video and audio processing and Linux operating system.

Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Kwon Oh-hyun said at the Korea Electronics Show 2016 held at COEX, central Seoul on Wednesday that establishing IoT platform and ecosystem will be a key to successful convergence of information technology.

The company introduced three ARTIK modules - ARTIK 1, ARTIK 5 and ARTIK 10 - in May last year and unveiled ARTIK Cloud, an open data exchange platform at Samsung Developer Conference 2016 in April.

With the release of the latest ARTIK series, the Korean tech giant hopes to gain a greater presence in the IoT market that is set to grow rapidly with growing use of mobile devices.

The new modules are available at global distributors including Arrow, Digi-Key and Mujin.
