South Korea’s chemical producer SB Chemical Co. will start mass production of nano-zinc oxide, a natural substance for sunscreen, the company said on Tuesday.

Nano-zinc oxide with particle size of between 20 and 30 nanometer in diameter is inorganic ingredient for sunscreen.

Sunscreens made with the natural zinc blend easily on skin, helping to give an even skin tone, and it has the advantage of both inorganic and organic sunscreen ingredients, according to the company. The sunscreen ingredient market is largely divided into two - inorganic and organic. Organic ingredient-based sunscreen takes 91 percent of local market that prefers smoother application while the inorganic ingredient-based sunscreen is more widely used in Europe and other parts of the world as it has higher UV protection and is less harmful to skin. But it does not blend easily on skin.

“I expect the inorganic ingredient-based sunscreen market will grow bigger as there are rising concerns over organic substances whose potential harms to the body need further investigation,” said Kim Hae-ryun, chairwoman of the chemical producer’s parent Songwon Group.

The chemical provider forecast local sunscreen industry to become 350 billion won ($308.8 million) market and the sunscreen ingredient sector grow to more than 35 billion won market by 2018. Currently in Korea, all inorganic ingredients for sunscreen are imported from Japan and Germany.
