South Korea’s food makers are branching out to the beauty and health market as the country becomes a powerhouse in beauty and health care.
CJ Cheiljedang Corp. has recently rolled out facial masks under its beauty food brand “Innerb.” The brand has been originally launched to provide edible pills for skin troubles.
The country’s leading ice cream and dairy products maker Binggrae Co. plans to turn out body-care products including body lotions and lip balms using its mainstay banana-flavored milk together with CJ OliveNetworks Co.
Beauty items are the only consumer market that has been unaffected by the slowdown at home and abroad. It is easier for a food maker to advance into the market using its distribution and retail network.
There had been successful precedents. MPK Group Inc. was able to turn out a profit after it acquired HanKang Intertrade in September last year. Korea Ginseng Corp. also is benefiting from ginseng-based cosmetics brand “Donginbi.”
