South Korea’s internet portal giant Naver Corp. announced on Monday that it has decided to spin off its research and development division that develops future technologies including autonomous vehicles and artificial intelligence.

A separate R&D entity will be established early next year and Song Chang-hyun, chief technology officer (CTO) of Naver, will co-head the research arm.

“Amid fiercer competition over future technology at home and abroad, we plan to use the new operation to focus on research and development and strengthen competitiveness,” said an official of the company.

The company separately on Monday declared in its developers’ meeting DEVIEW that its R&D goal is ambient intelligence, embedded software for Internet of Things.

Ambient intelligence refers to electronic environments that are sensitive and responsive to the presence of people. It would expand AI services to daily lives such as application on autonomous vehicles. The new R&D operation would play a core role in realizing ambient intelligence.

The company unveiled context-awareness digital assistant service named AMICA that answers and responds to user needs through app download or installation in motor vehicles.

Other applications of AI is its app Papago that can translate text, speech and images of words or phrases into other languages using Naver’s translation database and self-developed artificial intelligence software. Another area for R&D is autonomous vehicles. The company also unveiled its first robot called M1. The robot, equipped with a laser scanner and high-performing camera, moves around offices, shopping malls and movie theaters to act as moving guide.
