South Korean tax authorities have launched a special probe into Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. (DSME).

The shipbuilder said that the NTS Seoul Regional Office sent investigators at its Investigation Bureau IV Thursday morning to seize accounting books and documents from headquarters building in downtown Seoul. The on-going investigation is believed to be linked to the shipbuilder’s accounting irregularities that emerged during criminal investigations by prosecutors. The last time the shipbuilder received a regular tax probe was 2014. Tax authorities conduct such a probe every five years.

DSME reported profits in 2013 and 2014 and later corrected them as losses, asking tax authority to return about 230 billion won paid in excess.

In early July, NTS Commissioner Lim Hwan-soo told lawmakers that the NTS is obliged to investigate tax evasion charges, if any, with regards to DSME’s claims for a tax return on its correction application.
