Samsung Electronics Co. released 8-gigabyte (GB) LPDDR4 (low power, double data rate 4) mobile dynamic random access memory (DRAM) package, designed to power advanced mobile devices requiring high-performance, high-capacity, and ultra slim features.

The company on Thursday announced that it began supplying the 8GB mobile DRAM package built with four 16-gigabit (Gb) LPDDR4 memory chips and 10-nanometer (nm)-class technology. It is the first of its kind in the industry, the company claims. The latest DRAM package is making its debut only 14 months since the semiconductor maker released 20nm-class 16-Gb LPDDR4 DRAM in August last year.

“(The 8GB mobile DRAM solution) will speed up the launch of next-generation devices with even more advanced performance,” stated the company.

Operating at up to 4,255 megabits per second (Mbps), the latest 8GB LPDDR4 DRAM package works twice fast as DDR4 DRAM for high-end ultra-slim PCs typically working at 2,133 Mbps per pin. The mobile devices including smartphones topped with 8GB LPDDR4 DRAM solution can run virtual machine operation, which is running multiple operating systems on a single PC, and smoother ultra-high-definition video playback.

The power consumption efficiency and capacity are also doubled from the precedent 20nm-class 4GB DRAM package through the use of 10-nm class process technology and its own low-power circuit design.

It is an ultra slim DRAM package with dimensions of under 15 millimeters (mm) by 15 mm by 1.0 mm that it is possible to stack the solution together with universal flash storage (UFS) memory or a mobile application processor, making custom-made designing possible per device makers’ needs.
