Samsung Electronics Co. said on Tuesday that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Russian Railways to transport goods to Europe via the Trans-Siberian Railway, a move that will allow the South Korean tech company to reduce overall transportation time from 35 days by sea to 18 days.

Under the preliminary agreement signed in Moscow, finished goods and material supplies that were shipped directly from Korea and China to eastern Europe by sea will be delivered via the world’s longest trans-continental railway. Container ships with products and items manufactured in Korea and China will first be sent to Vladivostok using marine transportation, which will then move to European countries including Slovakia, Hungary, and Poland via the Trans-Siberian Railway.

The new route is expected to allow Samsung Electronics to not only reduce shipping time from 35 days to 18 days but also overall distribution costs as it passes by many production and sales bases in eastern Europe where it manages production corporations including Slovakia.

The Korean company expects that the overall reduction in transportation time will not only reduce distribution costs but allow it to more efficiently manage inventory and respond rapidly to product model changes.
