South Korea’s leading tire maker Hankook Tire Co. opened its research and development center called Hankook Technodome in the central city of Daejeon on Tuesday, as part of its efforts to focus on development of original as well as future-oriented technology. The tire company runs R&D centers in Germany, China, Japan and the U.S., apart from Korea. It injected 266.4 billion won ($236 million) in the new R&D center.

Hankook Technodome has various research and test facilities to secure technology for future auto industries for electric vehicles and autonomous vehicles.

In particular, the new R&D center has high-tech facilities including driving simulator with digital recording of results from virtual tests, and plans to develop eco-friendly materials, new materials and new technology.

The R&D center with 96,328 square meters in total floor area consists of a research building with two underground floors and four ground floors and a residence building with one underground floor and seven ground floors. The compound also is equipped with a day care center, hospital, gym and café.

Hankook Technodome was designed by Foster + Partners, a firm founded by British architect Norman Foster. “Hankook Technodome would become the mecca of high-tech technology of Hankook Tire where the company would develop technology which would lead the automotive industry, beyond the tire industry,” said Suh Seung Hwa, vice chairman and CEO of Hankook Tire.
