South Korea’s largest automaker Hyundai Motor Co. has opened its fourth manufacturing plant in China in Cangzhou, 200 kilometers southeast of Beijing on Tuesday.

The opening of the new plant with an annual capacity of 300,000 units marking the Korean carmaker’s 14th year of operation in China would allow Hyundai and its sister company Kia Motors to turn out up to 2.4 million vehicles annually from China, the company said in a statement. Group chairman Chung Mong-koo was there for the inaugurating ceremony. The plant was completed in four years at a cost of 2 trillion won ($1.77 billion).

Hyundai Motor has three vehicle plants in Beijing and a smaller factory for trucks and buses in Ziyang City, Sichuan Province. The Cangzhou part can utilize the existing parts suppliers and Tianjin Port, Hyundai Motor’s logistics base.

Built on a 1.92 million square meter site with a floor space of 250,000 square meters, the Cangzhou Plant is fully equipped with press, body, paint and assembly lines in addition to an engine plant. The facility’s initial capacity of 200,000 units will manufacture strategically important small cars. It will expand to its full capacity of 300,000 units by 2018.

The new facility, in particular, the body line, features a fully-automated system that utilizes 299 robots. As many as 38 vehicles can be produced in the new facility per hour. The plant would create over 6,000 new jobs as nine auto parts makers are affiliated to the plant.

At its opening, China-tailored vehicle Verna Yuena - the first model to be produced at the new plant - was unveiled. The Korean automaker opens the fifth plant in Chongqing next year.
