South Korea’s Hanwha Group which bolstered its defense operation through acquisitions of Samsung units embarked on inner reorganization to rationalize the business.

Hanwha Techwin Co., one of the conglomerate’s defense arms, said Monday in a regulatory filing that it will transfer its subsidiary Hanwha Defense Systems Corp.’s laser weapon and navigation equipment manufacturing businesses to Hanwha Corp.

As a result, Hanwha Corp. has secured laser weapons in its business portfolio which would help the company to complement its set of precision-guided munitions, including its root and mainstay explosives and missiles.

Hanwha Techwin Co. will solely take on unmanned systems and underwater surveillance equipment business that itself and other two affiliates - Hanwha Corp. and Hawha Systems Co. - specialize in. It aims to become prominent player in the field of firepower and unmanned systems by incorporating auto-driving robots into its mainstay self-propelled artillery.

Hanwha Systems will specialize in defense electronics, armed with command, control, communications, computer, and intelligence (C4I) systems, electro-optical targeting systems, tracking radar systems.

Hanwha Defense Systems will focus on ground combat systems such as armored vehicles and air defense systems.

A company official at Hanwha Group said the firm’s defense business needed realignment after a series of mergers and acquisitions in the sector over the past several years.
