South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries Co. obtained orders worth $220 million for four oil tankers in just two weeks after it landed on this year’s first deal.

Samsung Heavy Industries announced on Wednesday that it secured orders worth $220 million from Norway-based Viken Shipping AS to build two 113,000-deadweight ton (DWT) oil tankers and two 157,000-DWT oil tankers. The order on two of the smaller oil tankers and one 157,000-DWT tanker became binding on Wednesday and the remaining fleet order will be placed within this year, the company said.

The latest shipbuilding order is attached with the option for the ship owner to change the order to liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered carrier, reflecting the environment protection moves around the globe. If the Korean shipbuilder ends up constructing an LNG-powered crude oil carrier upon the Norwegian shipper’s request, it will become the first shipbuilder in the world to have built an LNG-powered oil tanker and the order value would go up according to the cost of the change, company said.

The shipbuilder’s order target for this year is $530 million. By adding the new order to the previous LNG carrier construction order worth $390 million secured late September, it now has shipbuilding orders worth $610 million in its book of new orders, meeting 11 percent of its annual target.

Samsung Heavy Industries is expected to win additional deal. The shipbuilder is in negotiation as the preferred bidder for Coral floating LNG project off Mozambique launched by Italy-based Eni SpA. The project that the Korean shipbuilder has teamed up with Technip from France and JGC from Japan will bring 3 trillion won ($2.5 billion) share for Samsung Heavy Industries.
