SK Hynix Inc. said Thursday that it has set out to develop artificial neural network devices using a ferroelectric material in joint efforts with Stanford University and U.S. companies Lam Research Corp. and Versum Materials, Inc.

The South Korean semiconductor supplier entered into “Neuromorphic Memory Research” agreement with the three U.S. partners, hoping to pave the way for the development of neuromorphic chips. A neuromorphic chip - semiconductor imitating the thinking process of a human brain based on the artificial neural network devices - is cut out for the big data era flooded with numerous unstructured data made up of texts, images, voices and visuals.

It is designed to create a new data processing system that can process more data simultaneously faster than current computing system that fulfills a command in serial order from data input and central processing unit to a memory semiconductor. It can also make up for speed drops and increase in power consumption of software-based neuromorphic computing.

“This joint R&D will make the best use of all the participants from devices, manufacturing process, equipment, materials, architecture area to accelerate the development process of the Artificial Neural Network Devices,”, said Executive Vice President Hong Joo-sung, who heads research and development (R&D) unit at SK Hynix.
