South Korea’s leading outdoor apparel and gear maker Black Yak Corp. has made a foray into the European market, becoming the first Korean sportswear supplier to set up own shops in the region largely dominated by Scandinavian premium outdoor brands.

The European fashion market has been a challenge to not only Korean outdoor suppliers but also Japanese rivals. What’s more, it is home to the world’s premium outdoor brands such as Sweden’s HAGLÖFS and Switzerland’s MAMMUT.

Despite such challenges, Black Yak Corp. set up a local branch in Munich, Germany in June and has already opened 55 stores across 10 countries in Europe. Its stores are located in Germany’s “GlobetrotterAusrüstung GmbH” - the largest independent outdoor retailer in Europe- and SportsCheck and Sport Schuster.

Black Yak plans to utilize its local branch to bolster sales in not only in brick-and-mortar stores but also on online shopping malls, including its own global website (global.blackyak.com). It aims to expand its European footprint further over time.
