South Korea’s jobless rate in September hit 3.6 percent, the highest for the month in 11 years as layoffs from struggling shipping and shipbuilding industries added woes to the economy in a lengthy slowdown.

According to September employment data released by the Statistics Korea on Wednesday, the number of the employed stood at 26,531,000 in September, up 267,000 from the same month last year in the slowest growth since May.

The number of people with jobs increased by more than 300,000 in August from the same month a year ago when the economy suffered from the outbreak of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome.

People on the payroll in manufacturing sector decreased 76,000, the biggest drop in 49 months and extending losses from the third month due to sluggish exports.

The employment rate edged up 0.1 percentage point from the same month last year to 61.0 percent. Jobless rate gained 0.4 percentage point on year to record 3.6 percent. The number of the unemployed aged from 20 to 50 increased 12,000.

The unemployment rate of Koreans in the age between 15 and 29 hit a fresh monthly record-high of 9.4 percent in September, up 1.5 percentage points on year.
