South Korea’s cargo truck drivers union went on a general strike from Monday midnight as threatened earlier, delivering another upset to the domestic logistics industry after walkout by railway counterpart.

The unionized workers of freight transport are protesting against the government’s reform outline on freight market released in August. They claim the proposed deregulation will lead to a rise in total number of cargo trucks, causing overcapacity and eventually a dip in freight charges. The unionized cargo truck drivers are also demanding authorities revamp the system of ownership in truck fleet.

The trade front will receive another blow after shipment disruption following Hanjin Shipping placement under court receivership. About 32.2 percent or 7,000 trucks of the total 21,757 container trailers are estimated to fall under the freight transport union. If non-unionized cargo truck drivers join the strike, the logistics sector could come to a standstill. In the last strike in 2008, 72 percent of the truck drivers took part.

The government warned the cargo truck union’s collective walkout will be defined as illegal and dealt strictly. It plans to stop providing fuel subsidies for six months, suspend or cancel driver’s license, and revoke cargo truck driver’s certification if cargo truck driver refuses or hampers freight transport as well as take legal actions against the ringleaders.
