South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Co. will compensate in full for repair charges of 885,000 Sonata sedans manufactured between 2011 and 2014 in the U. S.

According to U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California on Sunday, Hyundai Motor reached settlement agreement with the owners of Hyundai Sonata 2011-2014 models installed with Theta II 2.4 liter gasoline direct injection engines. The Hyundai Sonata owners who filed class action lawsuit claimed engine problems including sudden engine seizures and stalling as well unusual sounds from engine compartments, and the automaker violated consumer protection law by selling the cars without disclosing such defects.

The Korean automaker settled the claims by agreeing to provide engine check-up and repair services to 885,000 owners of 2011-2014 Hyundai Sonata sedans, extend powertrain warranty, and compensate already-made expenses for repair, towing and car rental. The company will also compensate the Sonata owners for loss of resale value due to engine failure.

Hyundai Motor submitted the final agreement to the court on September 28, and posted forms for claiming compensation at https://sonataenginesettlement.hyundaiusa.com/. The final hearing on the proposed settlement is scheduled for December 15.

Hyundai Motor shares closed Friday at 136,500 won, down 2,500 won or 1.8 percent from the previous session.
