South Korea’s chemical and high tech material company SKC Co. has completed construction of a factory that will produce chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) pads, a key part for chipmaking, in Anseong, Gyeonggi Province.

The company announced on Thursday that it held a ceremony for the completion of the CMP pads manufacturing facility that commands an area of 5,680 square meters for an annual capacity of 50,000 sheets.

A CMP pad is a high-performance polyurethane material designed for polishing and flattening the surface of semiconductor wafers. The market is mostly dominated by the U.S. as patents and licenses make entry to the market difficult for others. SKC tapped into the business after acquiring patents and business rights for CMP pads from Dong Sung A&T Co. in September 2015.

“We have an ambitious goal to contribute to domestic production of semiconductor materials by self-developing core ingredients, obtaining mass-producing technology and expanding sales for CMP slurries,” said Lee Wan-jae, chief executive officer of SKC.

An official from the company said that it is capable of producing customized products that can meet the demands of customers as it has its own technology to produce the core material prepolymer and CMP pads.

The company aims to achieve 300 billion won ($270 million) in sales by 2025 by investing 50 billion won in the CMP pad business by 2020.

It is also preparing for commercial production of CMP slurries, a chemical substance used in the CMP process.

SKC shares closed Thursday at 28,050 won, down 600 won or 2.09 percent from the previous session.
