Samsung Electronics Co. on Thursday announced that it was buying Viv Labs Inc, open artificial intelligence platform that allows anyone to use and integrate language-based interface and applications.

The deal whose financial terms were not disclosed for “customary closing conditions” underscores the electronics company’s plan to create an AI-based ecosystem for all of its electronics devices and services spanning from memory chips to smartphones and home devices.

“Unlike other existing AI-based services, Viv has a sophisticated natural language understanding, machine learning capabilities and strategic partnerships that will enrich a broader service ecosystem,” said Rhee Injong, chief technology officer (CTO) of the Mobile Communications business at Samsung Electronics.

Viv was built with both consumers and developers in mind, making it an ideal platform to host Samsung’s home appliances, wearables and other electronic devices, the company said.

Samsung plans to incorporate Viv platform in the coming Galaxy series in the latter half next year.

Samsung said it hopes that Viv’s superior platform, combined with Samsung’s leading devices, services and global resources, will help drive the next generation of AI solutions.

For Viv, Samsung would offer “unique opportunity to deliver to deliver a single conversational interface to the world’s apps and services across a diverse range of products” at a global scale, said Viv co-founder and chief executive officer (CEO), Dag Kittlaus.

Viv, a startup of about 30 workers, was founded by Dag Kittlaus, Adam Cheyer and Chris Brigham, who created Apple’s Siri. The company would maintain the same management and operation, but would work closely with Samsung in developments.
