German automaker Volkswagen Group is considering bringing Skoda, its mass-market brand, to Korea next year in hopes to restore its Korean operation wrecked by a series of emission irregularities, administrative penalties, and loss of consumer confidence.

According to automotive industry sources on Friday, Skoda is mulling entry to Korea early next year. Skoda will start deliveries to Korea and Iran prior to re-entering the U.S. market, Bernhard Maier, chief executive officer of Skoda, told media outlets during recent Paris Motor Show.

An official from Audi Volkswagen Korea admitted the group was mulling launching Skoda in Korea but has not decided on the timing.

Skoda is one the Czechs’ most beloved car brands whose history goes back to 1895. It sells more than 1 million cars every year, and last year recorded sales of 12.5 billion euros ($13.9 billion), up 6.2 percent on year.

The budget auto brand previously had planned for launching its cars in Korea this year and even held meetings with local dealers last year. But the plan fell through after its parent Volkswagen lost favor with Korean consumers over a series of emission scandals and its unapologetic response.

Audi Volkswagen Korea’s monthly sales were cut by roughly 90 percent after its 80 models that gained certification with falsified documents on emissions test results were banned from sales in the country.
