이미지 확대 South Korea decided a golf course in Seongju, southern region of the nation distant from residential neighborhood, as the new location to host a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) anti-missile battery.
The defense ministry said on Friday it changed the location originally planned nearby Seongju village due to strong protest from the villagers and notified the decision to the governor of Seongju County.
The golf course in Seongju is located 18 kilometers north of Seongju County Office and 680 meters above sea level, higher than the previously announced air defense artillery base in Seongju that stands 383 meters above sea level. It is expected to help the Seoul government to more easily defend against the public’s opposition after concerns on possible negative effects THAAD’s high-powered radar might have on the environment and public health.
Seoul decided to deploy the powerful U.S. antimissile system despite strong opposition from Beijing and Moscow amid escalated provocations from Pyongyang including fresh nuclear test and long-range missile launch this year.
The announcement on the revised location comes 79 days after the Seoul government selected an air defense artillery base in Seongju to install the anti-missile system. It leaves a poor precedent of overturning a major security decision upon pressure from the populace.
The Seongju golf course is owned by Lotte Group and the defense ministry plans to negotiate the price for the site with an aim to start operation of the THAAD anti-missile system within next year.
