Samsung C&T Corp. fashion division opens its fast fashion brand

Samsung C&T Corp. fashion division opens its fast fashion brand "8 Seconds" flagship store on the bustling Huaihai Road Friday.

Samsung C&T Corp.’s fast fashion brand 8 Seconds has ventured into the world’s largest market - China. It opened its first flagship store on the bustling Huaihai Road, Shanghai in China where global fast-fashion or SPA brands like Uniqlo, Zara, and H&M have long been established. The Korean brand is relatively new, created in 2012.

The future of Samsung fashion division spearheaded by President Lee Seo-hyun, second daughter of Samsung Group Chairman Lee Kun-hee hinges on the success of the budget fashion label in China.

Since it was merged into Samsung C&T from Cheil Industries, the fashion division recorded its first operating loss of 9 billion ($8.16 million) last year on sales of 1.74 trillion won, down from 1.85 trillion won in 2014.

Due to poor domestic market conditions, Samsung withdrew men’s apparel brand “MVIO” that ran for 20 years and fledgling brand “Ravenova” launched less than a year ago.

Its fashion mainstay is now limited to casual brand “Beanpole,” men’s apparel brand “Rogatis” and “Galaxy,” and 8 Seconds.

The budget fashion brand had the Chinese market from the beginning by including the number 8 the Chinese consider as lucky in the name. Its Shanghai store was opened at exactly 8:08 a.m. Friday. The wardrobe lineup designed by K-pop star G-Dragon that already has created a splash in domestic stores fills the bull’s eye zone in the shop.
